The best app for nights out (that actually get you to your friends)

Every friend group has a WhatsApp graveyard. "Sat plans ๐" from 2023. "Berlin trip ๐ฉ๐ช". "Who's coming out tonight????" with 340 unread messages and absolutely no useful answer to the only question that matters: where is everyone?
That is the weird thing about most apps for nights out. They are fine before the night starts. They are not built for the bit where the night becomes alive, stupid, emotional and impossible to manage. And that is, unfortunately, the main bit.
Planning the night is not the same as surviving it
There are loads of apps that help with the plan. Partiful is great for the invite. Who's coming, what's the vibe, where's the pre-drink, how cute can one event page be before it becomes a personality trait? DICE and Resident Advisor are great for the event. Tickets, line-ups, club nights, the thing you thought the night was going to revolve around before everyone developed free will. WhatsApp, Signal and Messenger are great for the chat before the chat becomes unusable. Important cultural work. We respect it.
But planning tools are about the idea of the night. aftrs is interested in the moment the night stops behaving like an idea.
The group chat always collapses eventually
A group chat is fine when everyone is at home, sober, horizontal and pretending they are going to be on time. It is less fine at 3.17am when half the group is inside, someone has gone to another venue, and someone else is sending "where are you???" into a thread nobody has opened for 26 minutes. That is not a failure. That is nightlife.
People split off. Plans mutate. Someone gets hungry. Someone gets a better offer. Someone says "come here" and forgets to say where "here" is. The group chat becomes less of a tool and more of an archaeological site. You scroll up. You piece together clues. You wonder whether everyone has moved on, gone home, or been absorbed into a completely different night. At some point, "where are you???" stops being a message and becomes the whole plot.
Maps help, but they don't understand the night
Location sharing is useful. Obviously. Sometimes you just need the dot.
But a dot on a map does not tell you enough. It does not tell you whether someone is actually out, still partying, looking for more, or quietly buying crisps and trying to leave. And if the map is always on, that creates a different problem. Being findable all the time is not the same as being available tonight. Especially in queer nightlife, where visibility is never neutral. Who can see you, where they can see you, and when they can see you are not tiny details. They are the whole point.
A night out is not one privacy setting. It is lots of tiny decisions, changing as the night changes.
What a night-out app actually needs to do
The best app for nights out should answer the questions people are already asking: who's out? who's nearby? who's still partying? who can see me right now? and how do I disappear when I'm done? That last one matters, because the goal is not to create another app you sit inside all night. The goal is to use your phone for 12 useful seconds, find your people, then put it away before someone catches you doing admin in the middle of a dancefloor.
A good night-out app should be a signal. Not a feed. Not a group chat graveyard. Not a permanent tracking device. Just enough information to get you back into the room.
That's why we built aftrs
aftrs is for the messy, moving, real-life bit of the night.
- You are invisible by default.
- When you're out, you set your party situation: partying or looking.
- You choose who can see you: all your friends, your inner circle, or no one.
- You use it when it helps - when plans are changing, people are moving, and the group chat has emotionally collapsed.
- Then you go invisible again.
aftrs is not trying to replace the group chat. Keep the memes. Keep the outfit panic. Keep the "who's bringing what?" spiral. But when the night starts moving, a chat thread is not enough. You do not need 48 unread messages. You need to know who's out, who's up for it, and where the night is going next.
Find your friends. Keep the night going. Disappear when you're done.
If you want an app that gets you to your friends and then gets out of the way, try aftrs.
